GREEK DRAMA: TRAGEDY & COMEDY

Introduction to ancient Greek theater, using as primary examples two plays related by their interest in governance and the status of women in Greek society: Sophocles Antigone and Aristophanes Lysistrata. Along with close reading of these texts, lectures, performance videos and in-class scene reading, will provide background about the theater as an Athenian institution in its political, religious, and social aspects, performance practice (ancient and modern), the influence of tragedy and comedy on Greek culture more broadly, and their reception in later centuries.
