If you are still looking for a summer course, CLST is offering CLST 262 Ancient Athletics with Dr. Carl E. Young M-F 11:00 AM to 12:15 PM.
Course Synopsis:
From their origins shrouded in mystery and ritual to the international fanfare of their modern descendants, the Olympic Games have maintained a firm grip on the public imagination for over twenty-five centuries. Then as now, athletic competition o¿ered opportunities to celebrate civic and individual achievements, and they promised —and sometimes even granted—fame and fortune to the victor. This course has three primary goals— ( 1) to introduce you to the tradition and history of Greek athletics and athletic festivals through close readings and discussions of ancient texts in translation — (2) to provide you with tools for examining ancient evidence, including archaeological and epigraphic evidence, as well as painting and sculpture — ( 3) to give you opportunities to think critically about the place of athletics in Greek literature, education, religion, history, and society, and about our own, modern athletic traditions and values.
