CLST 346S

Statues were the 'other population' of Greece and Rome. Portraits of athletes, generals, kings, emperors lined streets and filled markets. Why? What do statues do for people setting them up, for people viewing them? Seminar explores place of statues in Greek and Roman society, and relationship between context, style, and meaning. Course approaches material thematically and contextually. Particular attention paid to changing physical, cultural, historical, political contexts in which statues were set up and in which they continued to operate for centuries.
