Reading and interpretation of selected plays by Aeschylus, Sophocles, Euripides, Aristophanes, and Menander, with attention to language, meter, staging, characteristic themes and conventions, and especially the cultural context of ancient drama and its use as an instrument and venue of public ethical and political debate.
