How has being a Classical Studies graduate from Duke helped shape you personally and/or professionally?

"While an understanding of Latin certainly benefitted my medical studies, I value the critical thinking and general appreciation for culture and history that Classical Studies helped me develop. These traits have proven themselves time and again in my pursuits as a physician, a Naval officer, and a human being."

What advice would you give students in Duke's Classical Studies programs?

"Earnestly apply yourselves. Understand historical trends. Learn how to critically analyze, parse, and translate Latin and you will gain a set of tools that allow you to tackle problem sets outside of languages. Observe classical cultures and historical phenomena; understand them without passing judgement because we stand on the shoulders of giants."
