Department of Classical Studies Research Travel Awards
Thanks to the generosity of various endowments, the Department of Classical Studies can offer funding up to $2000 to a limited number of qualified Duke University students for summer research.
Eligibility
Applicants must be current undergraduates at the time of travel. Students do not have to be Classical Studies majors or minors, but do usually have a mentor or other close association within the Department.
Awards may be in one of the following categories:
- Archaeology, Classical Research: Funding is available for summer work such as participating on an archaeological dig, investigating material culture at first hand, and the like.
- Graduation with Distinction: Funding is available for Senior Thesis work.
- Language Study
Application Instructions
Prior to submitting an application, discuss the project with your advisor or mentor in the Department of Classical Studies. If you have the support of your advisor or mentor, complete the application by the deadline: March 15
Note: the deadline for submitting a Senior Thesis proposal to your Senior Thesis advisor is the first day of registration for the fall, which is usually the first week in April. You may submit a Research Travel Award application even if your plans are not yet finalized. As funds are limited, early application is encouraged.
Report Requirement
After completing their travel projects, students are asked to share their experiences with a minimum 1-page report with photos sent via Kuali by the start of the first day of classes during the Fall semester. In addition, students must submit itemized receipts to the Department by this date.
External Research Funding
The Classical Association of the Middle West and South annually awards $2000 scholarships to apply to participation in summer excavation or field school at an archaeological site in the Greco-Roman world. Applications are due in January or February.
