S. Elizabeth Needham, B.A. 2019

PhD Student in Classics, The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill – Chapel Hill, NC

2019 Major: Classical Languages (high distinction) and German

How has being a Classical Studies graduate from Duke helped shape you personally and/or professionally?

"The Duke Department of Classical Studies prepared me well to pursue first an MA and now a PhD in Classics. I feel that I received a solid foundation in both the languages and cultures of the ancient Mediterranean during my time at Duke that has continued to aid me in studying, teaching, and producing my own scholarship. I particularly appreciated the small class size at Duke, as it offered more opportunities for getting to know my classmates and professors."

What advice would you give students in Duke's Classical Studies programs?

"Talk to your professors and go to department events!"
