The Afterlife of Classics

The appropriation of classical antiquity by later cultures and its reinterpretation by different audiences and for different purposes, with emphasis on the use of antiquity in the construction of social/cultural identities. Topics may include examination of various 'classical revivals' in the arts, e.g., architecture, opera, epic; classics and ancient history in film; the use and misuse of ancient political thought and structures to shape and interpret modern institutions and historical discourse.
