For any students interested in Summer Session 2 courses, please consider the following:

Classical Sculpture [CLST346S/ARTHIST340S]
Tues, Thurs. 11:45-1:00 PM (we will not hold synchronous meetings during all scheduled sessions)
Instructor: Kyle Jazwa

This seminar will examine the history and diversity of sculpture during Greece’s Classical period. It will not be limited to freestanding sculpture; we will also explore the rich tradition of architectural sculpture, funerary sculpture, portrait sculpture, and the coroplastic arts. During our study, students will develop the skills to contextualize these pieces of art within the broader social, economic, political, and artistic contexts of their time. As such, a number of related topics, including the identity of the artists, the design and construction principles, and any architectural or civic associations, will be considered.

Classical Greek Archaeology [CLST348/ARTHIST207]
Tues, Thurs. 10:05-11:20 PM (we will not hold synchronous meetings during all scheduled sessions)
Instructor: Kyle Jazwa

In this course, we will study the art and archaeology of the Archaic to Classical periods of Greece. This was a time of rapid development that witnessed the rise of the Greek city-state, hoplite armies, and monumental temple architecture. It is also home to many pillars of traditional “western art,” from the Parthenon of Athens to the cult statue in the Temple of Zeus at Olympia – one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. This period is so rich in classics of art history that students will, in fact, encounter three of these “wonders!” More importantly, students will learn about the social, political, and economic background that spurred these constructions. In our discussions, emphasis will be placed on themes such as ritual, death and burial, warfare, political development and change, art, and architecture. Students will also practice their ability to critically analyze primary source material and understand material culture in context.

These summer classes were re-structured for the online learning environment. Please contact the instructor, Kyle Jazwa kyle.jazwa@duke.edu, with any questions.
