E. J. Cohen was born in Memphis, Tennessee and raised in Atlanta, Georgia. During their time at Duke, they completed a major in Classical Civilizations and a minor in Classical Archaeology. Their interest in Classics revolves around nautical archaeology, specifically how the cargo of shipwrecks can provide information on trade routes and interconnectivity. As such, they completed a one-semester independent study that analyzed the cargo of coin-bearing shipwrecks, which can be found here (https://storymaps.arcgis.com/stories/f4b37bc12cd740c1b0ce0eb6ecc04da3). They will be taking part in a program this summer sailing from Fiji to Bali to acquire both a SCUBA and a sailing license to further support their future as a nautical archaeologist.
